New Honorary Liveryman

We are delighted to welcome Colin Kill to the Cutlers.  Colin was indentured to the Company back in 1935 at the age of 14.

He worked for Down Bros in Tabard Street in the Borough for 50 years and for the last few years in Braintree Essex. He quite often had surgeons from Guys ask him to make specific instruments for unusual jobs.  As surgical instrument making was a protected trade in the second world war and living in Stockwell, after a day at work he went and manned the anti aircraft guns on Clapham Common in the evening as a member of the Home Guard.

During his time with Downs he had numerous apprentices working for him and they would present their work at Cutlers. Most of his old colleagues have passed away.

Over the last few years he has had a few visits to Doctors and Consultants for cancer and falls and when they have found out his occupation the Consultants have expressed sadness that quality workmanship from Downs is no longer available in the NHS.

Since retiring Colin has travelled around the world and has achieved a few world records. At 92 he became the oldest person to travel on the 361 metre long zipline at the Holmenkollen ski jump in Oslo, and was featured on the Norwegian Ski Association Facebook page. He is also the oldest virtual realty kite surfer. He is a keen kite maker and for many years was President of the Essex Kite Group. He has also taught the theory of flight in junior schools around London.

He delighted visitors and members alike on OpenHouse London in September with his good humour and stories.

On Wednesday 18 December 2019 he became an Honorary Liveryman of the Company.
